Here at Sugar Tree Inn, we are fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful landscapes and several gorgeous scenic drives that showcase the natural beauty of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here are a few great options for scenic drives near Lexington, VA and Staunton, VA:

1. Route 56 (Tye River Road)
We are fortunate here at Sugar Tree Inn to be able to drive this route every day as we live right off it! This route takes you through the George Washington National Forest and is particularly stunning in the fall. The drive passes through Crabtree Falls, the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River, and offers access to trails and picnic areas.

2. Blue Ridge Parkway
Less than one mile from us is one of the most iconic scenic drives in the U.S., the Blue Ridge Parkway. This drive offers stunning views of the mountains, forests, and valleys. The Parkway meanders through the Blue Ridge Mountains, with numerous overlooks, hiking trails, and picnic areas. Some noteworthy spots along the Parkway near Lexington include Humpback Rocks, Peaks of Otter, and Apple Orchard Falls

3. Virginia Route 39 (Maury River Road)
One of our favorite drives, this winding road follows the Maury River and takes you through Goshen Pass, a beautiful mountain gorge. The route offers striking views of the river, mountains, and forests, especially in the fall. Continue west into the Allegheny Mountains for more scenic vistas.

4. Virginia Route 11 (Lee Highway)
Running 339 miles in length, Route 11 runs parallel to I-81 but offers a much more scenic alternative, passing through historic towns and farmlands. This route also leads to Natural Bridge State Park, where you can view the famous limestone arch and explore nearby hiking trails. We use this route every time we go into Lexington or Staunton instead of using I-81. The views remind us of why we picked this beautiful location to call home.

5. Skyline Drive
Located in Shenandoah National Park where the Blue Ridge Parkway ends and Skyline Drive begins, this drive is famous for its sweeping mountain views, wildlife, and overlooks. In the fall, the changing leaves create a vibrant, colorful landscape. There are also opportunities for hiking and camping along the route.

6. Route 252 (Middlebrook Road)
Middlebrook Road winds through rolling farmland and offers a peaceful and scenic drive through rural Virginia. You can also stop at the historic town of Middlebrook or continue to the heart of Staunton, which has a well-preserved downtown area. From our location, you would access this drive via 606 in Raphine in which you would pass Rockbridge Vineyard and Brewery, Red Wing Farms, Wade’s Mill, and Verdant Acres Farm…must see spots on the North Rockbridge County Trail!
These drives are perfect for enjoying the beauty of Rockbridge County and the Shenandoah Valley, especially during the fall when the foliage is at its peak. We are extremely fortunate to be living in such a beautiful place! Come stay with us and check out the beauty for yourself!
