1. Route 56 (Tye River Road)

We drive this route every day—literally! Sugar Tree Inn sits just off Route 56, a scenic byway through the George Washington National Forest. Especially breathtaking in the fall, this road winds past Crabtree Falls (pictured above), the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi. It’s ideal for travelers seeking both natural beauty and access to hiking trails and picnic spots.

2. Blue Ridge Parkway

Less than a mile from Sugar Tree Inn, the Blue Ridge Parkway near Lexington VA is one of America’s most iconic scenic drives. With panoramic views of valleys, mountains, and forests, the Parkway is full of overlooks, trailheads, and charming roadside stops. Must-see points near us include Humpback Rocks, Peaks of Otter, and Apple Orchard Falls.

3. Virginia Route 39 (Maury River Road)

One of our favorite drives, this winding road follows the Maury River and passes through Goshen Pass, a dramatic mountain gorge that’s stunning year-round, but especially in autumn. The route is one of the best scenic drives in the Shenandoah Valley and continues west into the Allegheny Mountains for even more breathtaking vistas.

4. Virginia Route 11 (Lee Highway)

Running parallel to I-81, Route 11 is a slower, scenic alternative that winds through historic towns and lush farmland. It also leads to Natural Bridge State Park, where you can visit the iconic limestone arch. We take this route ourselves whenever we head to Lexington or Staunton, and every time it reminds us why we chose to live in such a beautiful part of Virginia.

5. Skyline Drive

Located just north of us in Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive is the northern continuation of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Famous for its sweeping views and vibrant fall foliage, Skyline Drive is a favorite for those seeking scenic road trips in Virginia. Wildlife, hiking trails, and picnic areas make it ideal for a day-long drive.

6. Route 252 (Middlebrook Road)
