Craft Wine & Beer Bliss at Rockbridge Vineyard & Brewery in Raphine, VA

Where Wine and Beer Live Happily Together -

Ever see a winery with a brewery attached and think, “Why not both?” That’s exactly what Robeer and wine glass dancing togetherckbridge Vineyard & Brewery is all about. Nestled in the scenic Shenandoah Valley near Lexington, VA, this family-run spot is as relaxed as it is intriguing—perfect whether you’re into crisp wine, crafty beer, or both. Whenever we get a chance to sneak away from our own mountain retreat, we love going there to relax, listen to live music on Sundays, and just enjoy the atmosphere.

Over the years, Rockbridge has earned serious accolades for its wines, including multiple Virginia Governor’s Cup wins for standout bottles like their V d’Or dessert wine. And more recently, they've added a whole taproom of in-house beers to the mix. So while one friend sips Riesling, the other can be enjoying a hazy IPA—all from the same porch.

A Bit About the Place: Where It All Happens

Founded in the late 1980s by Shep Rouse (a winemaker with a UC Davis degree and overlogo for Rockbridge Vineyard and Brewery 30 years of experience), the vineyard has grown grapes on about 18 acres of vines, including both vinifera and hybrid varieties to match Virginia’s unique climate. They supplement estate grapes with those from other trusted growers in the region, which lets them offer a wide range of wine styles without sacrificing local character.

In 2020, they expanded into craft brewing. Now you can taste small-batch beer in their taproom—everything from pale ales to coffee stouts, all brewed right on-site.

What to Sip: Wines Everyone Can Enjoy

You don’t need to be a wine geek to love Rockbridge wines! Here’s a simplified guide:several bottles of wine with awards

  • V d’Or (Dessert Wine) – A semi-frozen Vidal–Vignoles–Traminette ice wine that’s won major awards, including Top Wine of the Year at the Virginia Governor’s Cup. Perfect if you like sweet wines or want something special.
  • Tuscarora Red & White – Named after local geology and Native American heritage, the red is chillable and juicy; the white blends Concord and Vidal grapes for a semi‑dry, fruity sip.
  • Rieslings & Chardonnay – Rockbridge’s Chardonnay is light and approachable, while their Riesling (especially the 2015 vintage) earned high praise for its balance of sweetness and complexity.
  • Rosé – Made from Chambourcin or Pinot Noir, this has strawberry and watermelon vibes that make it immediate and fun.
  • Cabernet Franc & Syrah – These reds carry smoke, spice, and dark-fruit flavor without being too heavy. They pair well with hearty food and cozy evenings.

Let’s not forget the Beer! What the Brewery Brings to the Table

3 beers ranging in colorIf you're not in the mood for wine, or you want to bring everyone together, grab a flight of beers in their taproom (or get growlers or crowlers to go):

  • American Pale Ale (5.0% ABV) – Bright citrus and pine hops (think Cascade & Chinook), medium-bodied and easygoing.
  • Czech-Style Pilsner (4.8% ABV) – Clean and crisp with herbal Saaz-hop spice, brewed with local water from near George Washington National Forest.
  • Irish Red Ale (4.4% ABV) – Slightly caramel-forward and full of flavor while still super drinkable.
  • Hazy Double IPA (7.5% ABV) – Tropical and citrusy hops with soft oat and wheat malt for a lush mouthfeel.
  • Coffee Milk Stout (5.5% ABV) – Velvet-smooth nitro stout with chocolate and local roasted coffee—great for brunch or dessert.
  • Winter Porter (7% ABV) – Robust porter with toasted malt, dark fruit notes, and a pillowy finish.
  • Rock Dry Cider (7% ABV) – Made from local apples, completely dry but aromatic and refreshing.

Why It Works: The Low-Key Charm & Local Roots

  • Award-winning wines sold at reasonable prices with many between $15–25 per bottle, even for their deeper reds and dessert wines.
  • Wine and beer under one roof, so it's ideal for mixed groups or if you're curious about both. Honestly, this is the biggest draw for us. One prefers wine over beer and the other prefers beer over wine. It’s the best of both worlds!
  • Casual environment, with indoor and outdoor seating, picnic areas, and live music on Sundays. Bring the kids and the dogs…everyone is welcomed there!
