After this cold, snowy winter here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, we can’t be the only ones looking forward to spring! While we make the best of winter, the Shenandoah Valley comes alive in the springtime—quite literally with the flowers back in bloom and our migratory birds come home. We’re antsy to get back out and take part in the rich culture we have in the Valley, and we hope you will join us in the adventure and excitement.
If you’re planning a spring getaway in the Shenandoah Valley, there are countless things to do within 1.5 hour drive from us, ranging from crafts to craft beer and history to hustling. Below are hand-picked spring events near Lexington, Staunton, Fairfield, and Crozet, Virginia. Experience our area this spring no matter what your interests are.

18th Annual Rockbridge Bull & Oyster Fest: April 4th, 1-5pm
Virginia Horse Center, Lexington, VA
Ah shucks, you’ve got an interest in oysters huh? Or maybe you’re like us and never took much to them and are more interested in the bull part (we are from Minnesota after all, a state not known for its seafood!). For the 18th year, the Rockbridge Bull & Oyster Fest is back and raising money for the Rockbridge Area Health Center. Head down to Lexington for BBQ and oysters, listen to some music, play some games, and support a good cause. Early bird tickets go on sale this month (February) with the rest opening up in March, so be sure to get one while you can.
Fiber Festival: April 4th, 9am-5pm
Frontier Culture Museum, Staunton, VA
No, not that kind of fiber. You won’t find multigrain bread here, but you will find lots of wool! Happening for the fourth year, the Fiber Festival celebrates fiber in all forms of crafts with demonstrations from the animals that make it possible. Be sure to watch a sheep shearing or herding demo and browse the stalls. This festival runs on a “pay what you will” donation system and tickets are not needed ahead of time.
Historic Garden Week: April 18-25
Virgina wide, including locations in Staunton, Charlottesville, and Lexington
We said how the Valley comes alive in the spring, and we weren’t kidding. The Historic Garden Week has been around since 1927, continuously growing and allowing private and public gardens to showcase their beauty. Operating across Virigina, this year you can find 4 locations within a short drive of us. The Washington and Lee University in Lexington will have a display, as well as the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library in Staunton, and the University of Virginia and Monticello (Thomas Jefferson’s home) in Charlottesville.

The Kentucky Derby comes to Virgina!...well, kind of. Don’t forget to dress the part too—best hat and best dress just may walk away with a prize! So what better of an excuse do you need to dress to the nines!

Expect to listen to local singers and performers while you hop from vendor to vendor too.
Memorial Parade: May 15th
Lexington, VA
This annual parade held at the Virginia Military Institute commemorates and honors the alumni of the Institution who have died in the line of duty. The Corps of Cadets begin the parade by marching from the barracks, followed by a laying of flowers at the statue of Virginia Mourning Her Dead, ending with a gun salute. This is a special ceremony that reminds us of the sacrifices those have made for us.
